My journey at the Kung Fu School in Osaka, Japan, has been a journey of discovery, discipline, and heartfelt connection. I arrived hoping to lose weight and reset after years of sedentary work, and I found a place of calm, focus, and real transformation, made richer by the friendships I formed with fellow students and the leadership of the school.
When I began, I weighed 339 pounds (153.77 kg). Over eight months, I shed more than 85 pounds (38.77 kg), a major milestone that confirmed my progress and set the stage for the next goals I’m aiming for. The training challenged me physically and mentally in ways I hadn’t experienced since Army Basic Training, yet the environment—quiet, respectful, and focused—made it possible to meet those challenges with patience and resilience.

A standout aspect was the strong sense of community. The other students became my support system and friends for life. We explored Osaka together, sang karaoke, and enjoyed incredible food. We even went hiking in the mountains a few times, and when I struggled, they encouraged and pushed me to complete the climb, both metaphorically and literally. I’m grateful for the bonds I formed, and I know I’ll stay in contact with these friends long after I leave.
The daily routine contributed to my progress as well. The structure helped me maintain a steady diet and consistent activity, making it easier to integrate training into everyday life. Though located in Japan, the school follows an authentic Chinese martial arts lineage, creating a unique cross-cultural training environment that feels both rigorous and welcoming.
Training spanned Traditional Shaolin Kung Fu, Yang-style Tai Chi, Healing Chi Kung, Sanda, Wing Chun, and Baji Chuan. Shifu Sun’s vast knowledge and patient approach accommodated each student at a pace that was challenging yet attainable. Kathy and Shifu offered steady guidance on nutrition, practice habits, meditation, and overall well-being. Whenever I felt overwhelmed or discouraged, they helped me regain focus with encouragement and practical advice.
By the end, I grew more flexible, steadier in my stances, and capable of movements my body once thought impossible. I leave feeling younger, stronger, and more connected to both my body and mind than ever before. If you're looking for a place where discipline meets compassion, physical training is balanced with inner peace, and authentic martial arts are taught with genuine care, I highly recommend Japan Osaka Kung Fu School.
This returning student's journey demonstrates how consistent martial arts practice, authentic Kung Fu training, and a supportive international community can transform not only physical health, but also confidence, discipline, and overall well-being.
