Before arriving at the school I was going through the motions of life, drifting about without much aim or direction. I had ideas of what I wanted to do, but lacked properly following through on those goals. I chose to attend the Osaka Kung-Fu School to challenge myself, gain a greater sense of internal clarity, and to establish a new foundation for my life going forward.

The first week of training was the rough part overall as my body was incredibly sore from having to adapt to a new form of movement. However, even if the training was the same week to week, I slowly began to adapt as time went on. Reminding myself that progress wasn’t going to come quickly; that it was going to take time and consistent practice.

The school environment overall I found to be very pleasant and peaceful. Everyone who comes all have something they look to accomplish while attending, and we all do our best to support each other be it in training or in life. Even spending time with each other outside the school singing karaoke and exploring Osaka. There may be some who you may not individually connect with, but most people I’ve met here are people I consider to be dear friends. All of whom are people I may never have met had I not come to this school.

Being able to train in Japan has been an immense privilege as someone who has been fascinated with Japanese culture. There is something to the energy in certain parts you visit that feel as though they have been here longer than you’ve been alive. Makes you pause and think about what some of these sights have seen over course of Japan’s history. Living here for the time that I have, has allowed me to see that life continues to be what it will be where ever you go. That where ever it is we are, it’s up to us to make the most of our time, no matter what it is we decide to do next.

To anyone reading this wondering if you should take the leap, give it try and see if it’s right for you. No matter what happens you will have the foundation to learn further, or incorporate the training in your day to day routine. Having spent my time here and challenging myself, I have a clearer sense of what I need to do in order to build the life I want, what it’ll take to get there, and how to set a good pace.

Whatever you choose to do going forward, I hope you are able to be at peace with yourself and that the path you take is aligned with the person you are.
